About

My name is Jay DeLuca, I’m a software engineer specializing in observability. I spend a lot of time studying and exploring the software world, primarily working with JVM languages like Java and Kotlin, but I also enjoy using Python, Go, and Javascript. I’m currently employed at Grafana Labs, where I work on the OpenTelemetry Instrumentation and SDK team with a focus on the Java OTel ecosystem.

I’m intrigued by questions about what might be happening inside a system at any given moment, and I love exploring tools and techniques used to uncover those answers. As a former SRE, much of my career has involved tracking down complex software issues, often by leveraging observability tools and practices. That path led me to Grafana, where I now help build the kinds of tools that were once essential to my daily work.

This blog serves as both a wiki and a captain’s log, where I can capture what I’m learning and documenting notes from my engineering journey. The views and opinions expressed in this blog are solely my own and do not necessarily reflect those of my employers (past or present).
